Scholarship: a collaborative endeavour

Intentional 'communication', and thus 'understanding', is involved in a number of ways

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

o understanding the meaning of an expression (usually: only a means to an end)

o understanding 'what is meant' by a speaker (in the Gricean sense)

o understanding someone else (knowing what is going on in her/his mind)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

=> different senses of 'what is said'

o the gap (@Grice, @Kaplan) between 'what is said' and 'what is meant' ("Gemeintes")

=> Grice's 'conversational implicature' and understanding

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

o the target(s) of reading a philosophical text

o commitments in writing a philosophical text
